For
the outdoor recreationalist or for those just wanting to get
away for a while, you can enjoy all the hiking opportunities
in Rusk County, including:
The
Blue Hills Trail System (23 miles), in northwest
Rusk County is an excellent area for hiking. Approximately
10+ miles of hiking trails are available over the rolling
terrain.
The
Flambeau Mine Trails, one mile south of Ladysmith on
Highway 27, is a former mine site which has been reclaimed
into 5 miles of hiking trails with excellent areas for
watching wildlife, birds and insects. Being relatively
flat, the part gravel, part mowed trails are used for hiking
during the summer.
Hunter Walking Trails,
public lands maintained by the Rusk County Forestry Office,
are located in the Blue Hills and on County Forest lands in
Southern Rusk County. Although the trails are designed for
game bird hunting, they are also used for recreational
hiking. Maps are available at the Visitors Center and at
the County Forestry Office.
The Ice Age Trail, located nearby Murphy Flowage
Recreational Area in the northwestern portion of Rusk
County, runs for 27 miles within the County forest. The
Ice Age Trail follows the southern boundary of the most
recent glacier to invade Wisconsin about 12,000 years ago.
Riverside Trail in Ladysmith is part of the Ladysmith
parks system and is located along the Flambeau River between
Highway 27 and County Road G.
Sisters Farm Trail System,
southwest of Ladysmith, provides opportunities for hiking,
biking, and skiing. Along the banks of the Flambeau River,
Sisters Farm Trails System (7.5 miles) has hosted the annual
Lob Jam Mountain Bike until 2001, part of the Wisconsin
Off-Road Racing Series.
A small hiking trail to explore is the Wetland Walkway,
built by the Environmental Challenge in 2003, located
between Ladysmith’s O.J. Falge Park and the Rusk County
Visitor’s Center. Bring your hiking shoes to Rusk County!
