Shoreland/wetland Zoning affects all areas of Rusk County that are within 1000' of any lake, pond or flowage, or within 300' of any river or stream. Shoreland Zoning is administered by Section 17.57 of the Rusk County Code, which limits the development of wetlands and shoreland areas in order to protect water quality.
Among other things, Shoreland Zoning also protects fish spawning grounds, wildlife habitat and lake and river ecosystems. Permits are required for construction and other land uses.

BUILDING SETBACK
Buildings must be 75' from the Ordinary High Water Mark (OHWM). This includes decks, eaves, patios, retaining walls, gazebos, and travel trailers. In Floodplain areas, greater setbacks may be required. The setback requirement helps in reducing surface water runoff and potential pollution sources.
Shoreland Buffer Area
The area 35' from the OHWM is called the Shoreland Buffer Area. This area is to remain vegetated with tress, shrubs, and grasses or wildflowers. Only a 30' wide
area per lot is allowed to be cleared of vegetation for access to the water. The buffer area helps to protect the water quality because the roots of the plants and trees control erosion and filter pollutants before they enter the water.
