Business Recycling

Waste Reduction and Recycling: It’s not only good business – it’s the law!

The state Waste Reduction and Recycling Law along with local ordinances require all businesses and their building owner to:

  • Provide separate containers for the materials banned from landfills and incinerators
  • Regularly educate the occupants and users about the recycling program at their facility.
  • Arrange for the collection and delivery of the recyclables to a recycling facility.

The law also places a high priority on reducing waste and reusing items even before recycling.

How to get started?

Businesses are not able to use the recycling sites in Rusk County as they are only for residential use. Businesses must contract with a waste hauler to pick-up their recycling. With Single-Stream Recycling all of the recycling can be put into one recycling dumpster. There is no longer a need to get two separate dumpsters. Customers need to have a place where they can recycle at your business. There are many different recycling bins available.

Please view the Business Recycling PowerPoint to learn about landfill bans, acceptable items, local recycling opportunities, managing universal waste and much more.

Wisconsin Business Recycling Toolkit

There is a new resource available to help businesses through the process of establishing or changing a recycling program. Starting a recycling program from scratch or making dramatic changes to an existing program, can be intimidating and quite a challenge during times of limited staff and budgets. A business may have a contract with a waste hauler that focuses on garbage, rather than recycling. That business may not have enough recycling bins, or adequate space for separating and storing bulky items like cardboard. Some business managers or employees may simply not be aware of state recycling requirements and opportunities.

The Wisconsin Business Recycling Toolkit aims to help businesses overcome these challenges to develop successful recycling programs. The business section is designed for business managers, special events organizers or school officials looking to start or improve recycling programs. The toolkit can be found at www.shwec.uwm.edu/recyclingtoolkit/.
